Photography, Fashion, Make-up? I can’t decide. =[?

Katie asked the question:

Like most people, I’ve been through a lot of “phases” with what I think I’d like to do as a career, but photography has always been something I love… I went through quite a few disposable cameras as a kid, haha. However, I also think doing make-up and designing clothing would be amazing… The fashion industry is really harsh, though, so I don’t know if I’d want to be a designer, but fashion photography sounds fun… Then again, there are a LOT of photographers as well… It’s an expensive thing to do if you don’t know where you’re going [equipment, travelling, and education], and I have no idea what I’d do after I spent all of that money… I have a couple of years to go before college, but high schools pressure you to know what you want…I looked in to colleges, and I’m not sure which is best. My mom says The Art institute and such are over-advertised all over tv and overpriced…I was hoping someone could voice their opinion…Thanks for your time, and for reading my rant… >_<

    my dear kaite,
my kind suggestion is dont think abt photography as ur full time career. u learn photography as part time course, along witha full time course..like computers…after learning photography take up small assignments, slowly as u getting busy with assignments u can completely shift ur career,. all successful photographers did like this..
u need to do a course of ur interest, which promises a strong career, and as asecondery option think about photography…its my honest sugestion.

Something that combines these is film: doing cinematography, film make-up or costume design. If you take theater in college, you’ll have a lot of opportunity to use these interests. An area you could use your photography skills would be graphic design. And if you really want to do photography, try taking some journalism courses and doing photo-journalism. Advertising uses all these skills as well. And there is always travel writing. Next time you take a trip take some photos and write a short article about the place, then sell it to your local newspaper.

Well I too share the love for fashion and photography…I am acctually hoping to pursue a career in Fashion Photography. The school I am looking at is called Miami Ad School. It is in South Beach, Miami, Florida. It has an acctual Fashion Photography major. Students spend about two years at this school, and can take quarters away, like to New York for an internship. To get started i would suggest investing in an SLR camera, it will give you great pictures. This school tries to emphsize your creativity in creating your perfect shoot. Just work with your friends and use them to get the pictures you like. For most schools you will need to create a portfolio of your work with fashion photography. Just jot down your ideas and try your best to express them through the models, make-up and sets. One thing you should know is that there aren’t tons of fashion photographers out there…If you watch a runway show, all this cameras going off are for magazines and such.

If you have any more questions let me know!! I will be more than happy to help out!
