I want a job in photography.What can I do?

kdauburnfan asked the question:

I am miserable in my current job, and can’t figure out what I want to do. I have taken several career assessments, etc. and no luck.

I know that I love taking pictures more than anything. My passion for it exceeds my every hope and dream. I just don’t know what to do.

I love shooting still life, wildlife, scenery, etc….I know I need to get better at people.

How do people get jobs with magazines like National Geographic?

I will take any advice pertaining to this, I really just want to be happy in a career I know I will love for the rest of my life.
I began as a photojournalism major in college and due to health reasons, had to move to a college closer to home that did not offer photography classes.

Is photography considered a realistic profession?

They do offer college courses in photography you know. After that you might be able to get on with a cool magazine. Prob not National Geographic tho because thats probably the most sought after photography job ever.

Try getting a position at Olan Mills or Glamour Shots to improve your photographic skills with people as the subject. Enter some of your pictures into an Arts and Crafts fair so you win some awards. National Geographic will more likely hire someone with a background than a “newbie”.

It is a realistic career if you are dedicated.

You don’t need a photo education, but it will help alot. Some schools deal with a more technical development of skills and you will make a great assistant coming from there. Others focus in on personal development and creativity and they forge thier own careers.

Without school you are left with hard work and freelance trial by fire!! Shoot alot, pick up freelance work, shoot weddings or for a local newspaper if you need more people skill. Create your own website to promote yourself, When you have a healthy portfolio send submissions to the magazines you wish to shoot for, and then continue to send promotional material, at first you may not get the job, but keep promoting yourself and developing your skill and you can catch a break.

In the meantime, don’t look past portraiture and wedding work to help pay the bills.
