Photography Career?

Kris asked the question:

I love taking pictures, art, music, fashion, that sort of stuff. I am 21 and am finishing my bachelors degree in business. I have really been thinking strongly for the past year or so about pursuing in the photography field. I am a little nervous because I feel so young, how do I get started?

I’m 23, have a business degree, jus’ stumbled on that fact that I actually had a passion for photography. Never went to school for it and don’t know ALL of the technical aspects of it, but I jus’ started goin’ out and practicing with a camera I got a few months ago (Nikon D40X - good starter for SLR). Now I work in a newsroom at my local paper, I don’t do photography full-time, but they often send me on photo assignments. I hope to get more practice with portraits and eventually open a studio.

Just practice, practice, practice; which shouldn’t be too much of a task if you really enjoy it. Start applying for photography jobs, even if they’re little for now and build some experience and a portfolio.

As mentioned in your question there are a lot of fields you could go in to. One option you have is to sell stock photos. Try looking into the sites listed at

    Good Luck!

Try interning at a professional private studio and learn as much as you can and take as many pictures as you can. I know photography takes lots of experience. My wife started at a very popular studio near wear we live she even got to teach workshops at a local college. Going to work for a private studio opens a lot of doors. This was before the whole digital crazy so she would come home smelling like a darkroom. every day. That is the worst smell in the world.

    Good Luck

If you’re prepared to work for very little money for a very long time then the rewards come for some. I did four years at photographic college and a further five assisting / Junior photographer before I started to make any kind of decent money.

Many people will tell you that in order to succeed in photography you just need mad talent. You need to practice all the time and blah blah blah.

While you do need some talent, and you should always be working towards bettering your skills, what you REALLY need is MARKETING savvy….

I happen to post on a blog about this very topic. If you’d like, check out the link in the resource box… if anything, it will atleast give you some decent ideas on how to get started promoting yourself.
