Any careers dealing with photography (that doesn’t have humans as subjects)?
Time asked the question:
I like photography, but unfortunately I’m a very basic beginner. I’m certified in Microsoft Office programs and I’m currently making a good wage as an Excel/Access specialist, but I don’t want to do this with the rest of my life and I think something along the lines of digital photography may be something I would like to pursue. (I’m 23)
But I don’t like the idea of taking pics of kids, married couples, family portraits, high school graduates, etc… I think I would be more interested in focusing on nature, animals (especially birds), science (especially astronomy related… as long as it doesn’t require too much of a science background… I’m not a scientist), etc… (And no, I don’t want to go into journalism and take pics of current events / news)
Does anyone know of any non-human subject photography job titles / careers I could consider? Thanks.
Well konstantin1917 and DRAAGON if everyone went by that advice then I guess no one would ever bother to be photographers and the beauty of photography would pretty much be obsolete wouldn’t it? Well, us young folks have to start somewhere. Thanks for the advice, but I usually don’t turn down a challenge because there aren’t too many jobs available or because capital is hard to come by. If a person isn’t willing to go through hell for their dream, then they simply don’t deserve to work any higher than Walmart. Thanks for the advice - it was helpful.

Aerial Real Estate photography will always be in demand. Especially views that are at a lower and more pleasing angle than satellites can image.
Product photography, such as serial numbers and heavy equipment for inventory. Also, photography for Liability Attorney’s. Vehicles that were in an accident and injuries. There is some work with classified agencies, taking pictures of objects for sale.
First of all, no matter what kind of photography you do, be aware that you will be self-employed. There are no jobs in photography. None. Unless you want to be a photojournalist…but that involves people.
The forms of photography you’d want would be product photography (for advertising, catalogs, etc), Industrial photography (photographing factories and such for advertising, annual reports, etc), and architectural photography. There are few/no jobs in these fields…companies needing this work hire freelancers who specialize in the work needing done for each job that comes up.
Keep in mind, that starting such a business requires THOUSANDS of dollars in capital to get started. I have more than $50,000 in equipment and still don’t have everything….I occasionally have to go buy another background, another light, another lens, etc. to do a job. Also, those you’ll be competing with will either have a 4 yr degree in fine arts, or commercial photography or they’ll have worked as an assistant for several years to learn the trade. This is not something you do cause you have a fancy new digital camera and a computer wih photoshop. Its a very competitive, capital intensive, knowledge intensive business that is hard to make a living at.
Don’t give up the day job.
Photography as a career is littered with failures, studded with a few stars or anything in between.
Think before you leap.
Life ain’t easy in any profession but photography is VERY demanding.
It can be done without major expenditure, as I did, but take the warnings in the answers above seriously.
You could do some commercial type photography, I do a lot of product shots, jewelry, ceramics, art pieces, for various jewelry stores and local artists.
As for shooting wildlife, you could try submitting wildlife photos to various magazines, specializing in birds, animals etc..
Science, you’ll want to specialize in macro photography, photographing slides and other specimens..
The best money I’ve been making with photography is shooting sports.
You could shoot lawyers.
