I have about 400-500 dollars to spend on a great digital camera. Any recommendations?

Jessica D asked the question:

I am looking to purchase a digital camera but can’t spend any more than $500.00, I am not a professional (obviously) but I do enjoy photography and want to make great photos. Maybe one day my pictures will be good enough for me to pursue photography as a career, for now its just a fun hobby. Any recommendations for a great camera?

My husband has a Nikon D60X. It’s a great camera and you can find them in your price range. Good luck!

For a regular point-and-shoot, you can’t go wrong with the Sony CyberShot. I have an 8MP which is amazing but there is apparently a 10 or 12 out now.

For a DSLR (Digital SLR), you might be able to find a Canon Rebel for around $500, which is one of the best on the market. 0.2 second start-up time and 11x (I think) optical zoom are top-notch.

I would recommend staying in the Canon and Nikon zone. With only $500, the choices are slim, and it basically comes down to the Canon XT or the Nikon D40. The Nikon D40 is more of a transition camera from a p & s to first dSLR, while the Canon XT actually was around $1,000 when it first came out. The thing with the Canon XT is that sense there is a newer body out (Canon XS $549.99 at Circuit City) it is not being sold in regular stores. You should still be able to buy it at amazon.com and places like that. I used the Canon XT for the weekend a couple weeks ago and the pictures were amazing. See here for the pictures I took with it.

Good luck on finding a camera,
    John
